Travelling with your dog can be one of life’s greatest joys - long walks in new places, cosy evenings in a new space, and the simple comfort of having your four-legged companion with you. But not all hotels roll out the welcome mat for pets, and even the ones that say they do might have restrictions that can take you by surprise.

Whether you're planning a weekend escape or a longer stay, here’s what to know before booking a pet-friendly hotel, and how to make it a great experience for both you and your dog.

1. Check the Real Pet Policy

“Pet-friendly” means different things to different hotels. Some welcome all sizes and breeds with open arms. Others only allow small dogs or charge high fees per night. Always check:

  • Is there a size or breed restriction

  • How much is the pet fee per night or per stay

  • Can dogs be left alone in the room

  • Are there specific pet-friendly rooms or areas

Reading the fine print can save you unexpected stress at check-in.

2. Look Beyond Just the Hotel

The location matters just as much as the room. Is the hotel near green space or a walkable area Are there dog-friendly cafés or pubs nearby Will you have easy access to quiet places for a morning walk

Even a gorgeous hotel can be less enjoyable if you’re stuck on the fourth floor with no lift and nowhere nearby to stretch your dog’s legs.

3. Pack With Purpose

Bring the essentials to help your dog settle in. This might include:

  • A familiar blanket or bed

  • Food and collapsible bowls

  • Towels for muddy paws

  • A long lead for safe outdoor exploring

  • Treats or toys to help them relax

Some hotels provide bowls and beds but it is always best to come prepared just in case.

4. Be a Good Guest

Help hotels remain pet-friendly by following basic etiquette. Keep your dog calm and quiet, clean up promptly, and avoid leaving them alone for long periods if it is not permitted. A well-behaved dog helps keep the doors open for other travelling pups.

5. Ask for Hidden Perks

Some hotels go above and beyond for canine guests - think doggy welcome packs, special menus, or even spa treatments. These thoughtful touches can make your stay feel extra special.

If in doubt, call ahead and ask. A quick chat with the front desk can reveal extras that are not listed online.
